Clinical Psychology Degree Programs

Clinical psychologists work with individuals suffering from mental trauma, illness, or disability. Their primary role is the evaluation and diagnosis of mental illness in their patients. Clinical psychologists employ their training and knowledge of the brain, cognition and emotion, and the human thought process to provide therapy and treatment for individuals suffering from moderate to severe mental health problems. Most students who decide to puruse clinical psychology as a career will choose to specialize in one particular area. Some will decide to work exclusively with substance abuse victims, addressing their ongoing addiction and mental health needs. Others will focus on marriage and family issues. Some clinical psychologists will opt to treat specific patient populations with particular issues, such as the elderly, children, or those who have suffered traumatic brain damage due to an accident.
Since clinical psychology is such a specialized field, and it affects the wellbeing of entire populations, clinical psychologists are required to receive extensive education and experience, and must be licensed in the state where they work. Most states in the US require clinical psychologists involved in direct patient treatment to have doctoral degree in clinical psychology. Doctoral degrees in clinical psychology teach students theory, treatment practices, and research methodologies and analysis.
