Associate Degree in Psychology

An associate degree in psychology is a preparatory degree, in that it prepares students for additional education opportunities within the field of psychology. An associate degree in psychology, while valuable, is not sufficient to prepare students for career opportunities within the field of psychology. A bachelor's degree is the minimum degree that will qualify individuals for entry-level career positions and to qualify for most entry-level psychology positions a master's or PhD in psychology is required.

The associate in psychology is an undergraduate degree that if offered at community colleges across the nation. It usually takes about two years to earn an associate degree in psychology. The majority of students who earn an associate's degree in psychology, upon graduation, will transfer to an accredited four-year university to pursue a bachelor's degree.

While an associate degree is not a terminal degree, it is a great stepping stone into bachelor's degree program in psychology or a related field and is good preparation for several entry-level career opportunities outside for the psychology field. If you want to become a practicing psychologist, and aren't enrolled in a regionally accredited college or university, then an associate degree in psychology is a great place to start. Just remember that today most states require that you earn a master's or doctoral degree in psychology before you can receive a license to practice.

When considering associate degree programs you'll want to make sure you attend a community college that is regionally accredited so that you can transfer your degree (and credits) to a four-year university down the road. Some students make the mistake of earning an associates degree at a "nationally" accredited community college or vocational school only to find out later that their degree isn't transferable to a regionally accredited four-year college or university. (Almost all four-year colleges and universities are regionally accredited).

Below we've listed 195 regionally accredited community colleges, as well as four-year colleges and universities, that offer associate degree programs in psychology.
